The Canopy Review is a literary journal curated by MFA students at the College of New Rochelle. We embrace innovative work with the aim to be an ally for contemporary writing, with an emphasis on emerging voices. We welcome poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and non-traditional, experimental, or cross-genre narratives and styles.

“Canopy” brings to mind an umbrella or the uppermost layer in a forest. Our mission is to provide a space for writers whose work may fall out of mainstream aesthetics and for those whose work challenges, assuages, and arrests.

Submission Guidelines

Please submit all work through Submittable. Simultaneous submissions are accepted.  Please contact us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere and withdraw your submission through Submittable. If a poem in a group of 3-5 poems is accepted, please send us a note via Submittable identifying which pieces are no longer available.

We only consider unpublished work. Please do not submit any pieces that have been published on your personal blog, on your Facebook page, in other magazines/journals including those online, in an anthology, or chapbook.

Individuals previously affiliated with the College of New Rochelle (students, staff, and/or faculty), should not submit to The Canopy Review until they have been unaffiliated for five full years.

Fiction:  (literary, genre, chapter excerpt, etc.) up to 6,000 words

Poetry: (form, free verse, lyrical, prose poetry, etc.) 3 to 5 poems

Nonfiction: (memoir, essay, hybrid essay, etc.) up to 6000 words

Short Pieces: (flash fiction, micro essay, one act plays, etc.) up to 1,500 words. 

Visual Art:  3 to 5 pieces.

We read submissions as quickly as we can, but as a magazine run by students and volunteers we cannot guarantee a turnaround time. If you have an urgent question regarding a submission, you may contact the editorial team at thecanopyreview [at] gmail [dot] com.
